Have you had trouble sticking to your resolutions? Or maybe you need some additional help establishing good habits for the remainder of the year. If this sounds like you, read on to learn UCI’s top four tips for keeping your resolutions all year long.

Take A Close Look At Your Goals For The Year

4 Tips For Keeping Up With Your Resolutions All YearLet’s start by taking a closer look at the resolutions you set for yourself at the beginning of the year. If you had difficulty sticking to your resolution as the year went on, there’s a chance you had set too large of a goal for yourself and found that it was unrealistic to achieve all at once.

Setting SMART goals can allow you to take your overall goal and break it down into smaller, more attainable goals. Setting smaller goals will enable you to better stay on track to accomplish your larger goal.

Reevaluate Your Resolutions

As you look closer at the goals you had set for yourself over six months ago, ask yourself if they still are relevant to your current situation. Suppose you set a resolution that no longer aligns with your life or future. For example, let’s say your resolution was to begin a practical nursing program so you can better your future career. However, after completing research on practical nursing schools, you determine that nursing is not the right path for you, and you decide to pursue a different field instead.

You can adjust your resolution to attending school for a different program that will better suit your life and the overall goal of bettering your future career. Just because you had set one specific resolution doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to change your mind as you learn and grow!

Start Creating Positive Habits

According to an article published by Psych Central, it takes as little as 59 days for a habit to become routine. That means it’s never too late to start establishing positive habits that will improve your life and help you stay on track with your resolutions. Spending time thinking about what habits you could improve to achieve your goals can benefit you.

A helpful tip for establishing a new habit is to have a specific time of day to do the particular task that you want to become routine. For example, let’s say your new year’s resolution was to read one book every month of the year. To help you develop a routine of reading, try reading every day before bed. In a few months’ time, reading will become an automatic part of your daily routine.

Get Additional Support If You Need It

Having a strong support system can benefit anyone when trying to stick to a resolution. Finding someone within your support network who has similar goals can help hold you accountable and ensure you follow through with your plan of creating good habits.

Support systems can look different for each individual; for some, it could be a parent or close friend, while for others, it could mean joining a community support group. Regardless of how you choose to find the support you need, having people that you can rely on to motivate you can help you stay on the path to successfully achieving your goals!
