Step 1: Plan


We understand that everyone is different. We all have our unique circumstances, requirements, and goals. At United, we believe in identifying each student’s needs to create an individual educational plan that works specifically for you.

Once you request more information, you will be introduced to one of our supportive and friendly career advisors. They will work with you to develop a plan that gets you on your way to achieving your financial goals. You can ask any questions you have to learn all about the student experience at United. After your meeting, you will be provided with an opportunity to tour the campus, see classrooms and labs, and chat with your future instructors.

Step 2: Equip

After you’ve met with an admissions advisor, our dedicated enrollment team will ensure you are equipped with everything you need to get started with your classes, including creating a financial plan that helps you accomplish your career goals.

You will have a meeting with a financial aid advisor, who will explain and guide you through the financial aid process. You will get the opportunity to learn about the different financial aid programs you could qualify for, for example, grants** or loans.

We will assist you in completing your enrollment by getting you registered for your classes and helping you plan for other support you may need, like childcare or transportation.

Step 3: Learn

You are now officially enrolled, and it’s time to start your classes! You will gain important career training, learn practical skills, and practice them while in the classroom and with our interactive labs.

Each of our career-focused degree programs offered here at United includes hands-on training. For instance, students in our Medical Assisting program will learn essential skills, such as measuring vital signs, giving injections, conducting lab tests, drawing a patient’s blood.

While you train for a new healthcare career, you will be in a supportive and helpful environment that caters to all students through our WE CARE educational approach. Academic advising, tutoring, and other services are provided to empower you to succeed in your classes.

Step 4: Enhance

As you learn the important practical skills taught in our healthcare training programs, you will also improve your marketability to employers and prepare for professional certification or license exams. The certifications and licenses will differ depending on the career field you choose, as employers have different criteria for different jobs.

For instance, students who complete our Medical Billing and Coding program are prepared for the Certified Billing and Coding Specialist* certification exam, while students who are enrolled in the Practical Nursing program will prepare for the NCLEX-PN° exam.

Improving your skillset with professional certifications shows your value and can give you an edge over those who may not be certified as you apply for healthcare jobs.

Step 5: Apply

Outside of learning in a classroom or lab setting, you will be given the opportunity to apply what you have learned through an externship or a clinical experience. This provides you with real-life experiences, which is a great asset for potential employment. You will practice the new skills you have gained to be successful on the job and after graduation.

While you apply your skills in the real world, you will be presented with opportunities to create positive relationships with potential employers and others in your local healthcare community. This networking will be of great value when you start your job search. For students enrolled in our Practical Nursing program, you will have clinical rotations at local healthcare facilities.

Step 6: Succeed

Once you finish your classes, complete your externship or clinicals, and pass your certification exams, it’s time for you to graduate. You are now equipped to begin your new healthcare career!

How To Stick To Your Resolutions and Goals All Year Long

The new year has come, and we’re now weeks into 2021. We all made our New Year’s resolutions and goals for this year, but creating them is the easy part. Staying committed and sticking to your resolutions and goals all year long is much harder.

You may have created a resolution for yourself to work out more and eat healthier. Or maybe you created a goal to start working toward a new career by going to school and getting a degree. Whatever your goals and resolutions are for 2021, there are things you can do to help you stay focused and working toward your goals all year long. Check out our top tips for staying committed to your goals this year!

Create a Plan Just for You

What works for someone else may not be best for you. You need a plan designed for you and your goals. The first thing to do is create specific goals. So, if your New Year’s resolution is to work out more, how many times per week are you going to work out? What specific workouts are you going to do? When are you going to exercise? Are you going to work out at home or a gym? Answering these questions will help you create a specific plan for your resolution.

They say it takes 21 days to build a habit and 90 days to build a lifestyle. This really means that when you are trying to build a new habit, every time you do this new thing, it gets a little easier, and before you know it, it’s a lifestyle, and you’re a natural. Exercising will be hard at first if you have not done it in a while. You will be sore afterward and may get tired quickly. But as you continue to work out, you build endurance and muscle, and it gets easier because you get better as you go.

When we try to better ourselves with resolutions and goals, it can be tempting to try and tackle everything at once. But having too many resolutions can actually work against you. It can be overwhelming to try and change too many things at a time, which leads to giving up and throwing in the towel. If you pick your top three and really focus on those, you will be more likely to reach them. The trick is to start small and build up to your larger goals by breaking them down into smaller steps.

In today’s world of technology, there is an app for everything. If your goal is to exercise more, using an app to help you plan and track your workouts can help you stay focused. If your goal is to eat healthier, using an app to track your meals can help you better understand what foods have more benefits than others. If your goal is to save more money, using a budgeting app can help you track your spending, so you know where your money is going and can cut back if needed.

Choose Progress Over Perfection

Change is a process, and nothing great happens overnight. The Statue of Liberty was not built in one day, and the Mona Lisa was not painted in one night. Great things take time, and that includes your goals and resolutions. If your goal is to start working toward a new career by enrolling in school, realize that you are making progress toward your goal with every class you attend and every exam you take. It will take time to finish your degree and graduate, but when you do, you will be ready to achieve your goal of starting a new career.

While we all want things to be perfect, waiting until the exact perfect moment to do something often means that it will never get done because there never is a perfect moment. Things will never be exactly right, but if we want to move toward our goals and dreams, we have to jump and take the leap of faith.

Perfection doesn’t really exist; it’s just something we strive for that keeps us doing the same thing over and over again. For example, if you are trying to become a vegetarian, and you slip up and eat meat one day, that doesn’t mean you failed. Take note of what made you do this, and then try the next day again using what you learned to stay on track. Failure is not really failure if we learn from it and then do better next time. This literally changes failure into progress because when you do this each time, you’re getting better and better as you go.

Staying focused on your New Year’s resolutions and goals can be a challenge. It’s exciting initially, but as time goes, the excitement wears off, and motivation goes down. So how can we keep ourselves motivated all year long? There are a few great ways to do this. First, give yourself rewards for staying the course and continuing to work toward your goals. For example, if you’re going to school to start a new career, maybe you reward yourself with ice cream every time you pass an exam. Secondly, giving yourself daily affirmations to inspire you to keep going can be very powerful. If there are certain words or quotes that inspire you, put them where you will see them each morning when you first wake up. This can be a sticky note on your mirror or a notification on your phone!

A third way to stay motivated is to know your why. Remind yourself why you want to accomplish these goals and resolutions. What is driving you to improve your life? Maybe you want to start a better career for your family. Maybe you want to show your children what’s possible when you work hard toward your goals. On days when you get off track or want to give up, remembering your why can help keep you focused and committed.

Get Support of Family and Friends

The support of the people around you can literally make or break your goals. If you have a strong support network of family and friends, you are more likely to stick with your resolutions and achieve them. Also, finding a mentor or someone who is already where you want to be can accelerate your path toward reaching your goals because they can share tips from their own experiences with you. The key here is to purposely create this network of positive influence. Create your team of cheerleaders to motivate you along the way, and remember, it’s always okay to ask for help when you need it.

Another great option is to find an accountability partner. Maybe someone you know has the same New Year’s resolution that you do. Partner up with them to help keep each other motivated and on track. Schedule time for daily or weekly conversations to check in on each other and see how the other is doing. Having someone to talk to who is going through the same thing as you can make a huge difference!

Meet The Campus Director – Ali Rachel

Meet Ali Rachel, Campus Director at United Career Institute in Fayette County!

In her new role as Campus Director, Ali is driven by the opportunity she has to help people every day when she goes to work. “I really, really believe in what we do. I really believe in career schools. Not everyone fits into one box. I want to be there for students who don’t fit into the four-year university box,” said Ali.

Ali has a great philosophy on helping students achieve their career goals, and that is to treat each student as an individual. She believes it’s extremely important to stop and understand each person’s unique story, how they learn, and how they interact with others. By truly understanding who each person is and where they come from, you can figure out what motivates them and how you can really help them be successful.

This philosophy on helping students is what enables each student at United to be treated as an individual person, with a supportive and caring environment that empowers them to succeed.

Ali loves many things about her role as Campus Director, but her favorite parts of the job are definitely the little things like “when I see a happy student in the hallway and they are really happy to be at school. For me, it’s all about the wins in students’ lives, like one student who was working in fast food and recently got a job at a nursing home.”

As for her own experience with higher education, Ali went to the University of Alabama and studied marketing. She then went on to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and studied merchandise marketing. Ali has always loved fashion and even used to collect Vogue magazines.

While enrolled in college at Alabama, Ali interned in the marketing department at West Virginia Junior College. After she graduated, a marketing position became available, so she started full-time in the marketing department then.

Ali made the decision to accept the position as Campus Director at United because she wanted to be more involved in the day-to-day operations of the school. With Campus Director Pam Hughes getting a promotion, there was an opening that needed to be filled, and Ali jumped on this opportunity to help and empower students every day.

With the continued growth of the medical field and the current COVID-19 pandemic, Ali believes there is a need for well-trained medical professionals in Fayette County. “With our focus on medical programs, we can be truly centered on medical training. Our career-focused programs are quick, so we can get people trained faster and out into the working world.”

Ali has some amazing advice for students who are thinking about attending United Career Institute. “You will be treated as an individual and not just a number. There is so much that goes into going to school, and it can seem very intimidating, but we can work through it together if you ask for help. Don’t be intimidated and don’t be afraid to make that first step.”

For high schoolers who are considering United, Ali says, “don’t be afraid to try something different. Many high schools preach to students about going to a four-year college, but that’s not right for everyone. Education can mean many things, not just a four-year institution.”

When asked what gets her up in the morning and motivates her to do her best each day, Ali said that it’s “my students and co-workers that motivate me. My co-workers really care about what they’re doing. They love to be here and that really helps me stay motivated. It can be really hard and exhausting, but it’s worth it to help people create a better future for themselves.”

The accomplishment in Ali’s life that she is most proud of is graduating college. She believes that education is a privilege, and she wants to help facilitate that privilege for as many people as possible. Many people never have the opportunity to go to college, so it’s something she takes very seriously.

When asked about the best advice she has received, Ali shared a quote that really resonates with her: “At all times people are doing one of two things – they are showing love or crying out for it.” Ali believes that when someone is acting a certain way, we should try and peel back the layers and find out why, so that we can truly help them on an individual level.

Outside of work, Ali loves watching college football and says her life is currently consumed by it. In the summer, Ali and her fiancé Zach enjoy going out on the boat and spending time on the lake. Ali and Zach also love to cook. She says she loves anything to do with food and could spend hours reading recipes and cooking. Ali says her favorite food is pasta in any form. That’s what she reaches to for comfort food or if she doesn’t know what to make. If she could have one superpower, Ali says she would choose teleportation because she doesn’t like to drive and it’s frustrating for her.

How to Choose the Right Career Training Program for You

This week, we will explore the best ways to make these important decisions and the things you should consider as you go.

Set Your Career Goals

The first thing to consider as you plan your path toward a career you will love, is what are your career goals? You may already have a set goal in mind, such as becoming a doctor, or you may need help figuring this out for yourself. For those who are still undecided on exactly what their career goals should be, there are a few questions to ask yourself that will help you create your own personal career goals.

  • Why do you want to start a new career? Starting with the reasons you want to begin a new career is helpful because it will guide and motivate you as you begin this new journey. Are you trying to create a better life for your family? Are you just very self-motivated and driven? Or is there something else pushing you?
  • What are you looking for in a new career? To set career goals that fit you, it’s important to know exactly what you want from your new career path. Do you want an increased salary, better job security, more flexibility, the opportunity to help people, the ability to work from home, or something else?
  • What areas are you interested in? Figuring out what you’re already good at and what you are interested in will help guide you toward the right career path for you. For example, maybe you enjoy working with computers, or maybe you prefer to work with people instead. Whatever it may be, choose a career path you will enjoy and be good at.
  • Do you plan to continue advancing your career? Deciding now if you want to get your dream job and stay in it for a while, or continue advancing and climbing the ladder to a leadership role, will help you decide on goals that fit your now and your future.
  • Where do you want to be in five years? You know where you are now, and this question helps you visualize where you’re going. What exactly do you want once you meet your career goals? Do you want to be able to afford nice vacations? Is your goal to eventually buy a house? Or pay for your children’s education? Whatever is it that you want for yourself, creating a specific vision will help keep you motivated and inspired along the way.

After answering these questions, you should be ready to set career goals that will help create the future you want for yourself. Remember, any goals you set for yourself should always be SMART goals, which means they are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.

Here is a great example of a SMART career goal: I want to start a career as a practical nurse in Fayette County in one year.

Determine Your Needs

Now that you’ve created career goals for yourself, it’s time to determine exactly what you need to get there. Each career field has different degrees and training requirements, and you have specific needs that will help you reach your goals.

First, look at some of the job descriptions for the career you want to pursue. If you want to become a practical nurse, look at some of the local places hiring for this role. What education or training do they require? Will you need a license to practice? Do they want you to have completed clinical hours? Do you need experience? What skills will you have to perform while on the job? After you have looked at some job descriptions, make a list of the most common things you noticed. This list of education, skills, experience, and credentials is exactly what you need to gain in order to qualify for the job you want.

It’s important to know exactly what you need to get your dream job, but you also need to know which path will work best for you. Answering the following questions will help direct you toward the path that fits your specific needs.

  • What is your learning style? We all have different learning styles. Some people learn better by reading about a topic, some by hearing others explain it, and some by getting hands-on and doing it themselves. Figuring out your learning style will help you choose a career training program that teaches to the way you learn.
  • What is your personality type? In addition to different learning styles, we all have different personality types. Consider taking a personality test, such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator, to find out your personality type, as this can help you throughout the process of planning the path to reach your career goals.

Research Career Training Options

You have set your career goals and know exactly what you need to get there, so now you’re ready to explore the different career training options available and choose the one that works best for you. To do this, you will need to evaluate different programs based on how they help you achieve your career goals and how well they meet your specific needs.

  • Does the program train you for the specific job you want? It’s time to use the list you made in the last step of exactly what employers require for your specific job. Compare the career training programs you are considering to this list. Does it provide you with the knowledge and skills needed? Do you prepare for certifications? Is the program length aligned with when you want to start your new career?
  • Is the school aligned with your needs? Next, you need to determine if the school will work for you. Here are some questions to ask about each school. Do you have a dedicated admissions advisor to help you as you apply? Does the school offer resources like financial aid and grants/scholarships? Does the teaching style work with your learning style? Do students get personalized instruction?
  • What support is offered to students? Finally, you need to know what support is offered to students as they complete their career training and beyond. Here are a few things to ask. Is there a supportive environment for students? Do students receive additional help when needed? Are career services offered to help students get from the program to a job? Are there any resources that students will continue to have even after graduation?

As you evaluate the different alternatives for career training, feel free to make a pros and cons list for each to help you compare them. Once you have evaluated your career training options, you can confidently choose the one that will set you up for career success, because you know it’s training you in the exact areas you need, in the way that you learn best.

Chelsea Lee – Student Highlight

Chelsea Lee is a student in United Career Institute’s Medical Assisting program. Chelsea also works at Applebee’s while she is going to school. Working while in school is common amongst United students and we strive to offer our students the services they need to balance family, work, and school life. Our fast-track programs are also designed to get students into the professional world as quickly as possible, helping to facilitate that balance even further. Chelsea has worked at Applebee’s since she was in high school, which coincidentally, is where she heard about United Career Institute. Meghan Murray, United’s High School Admissions Advisor, visited Chelsea’s school and piqued her interest in United. Chelsea was also a high-school scholarship recipient.

Chelsea says that she chose United because of the recommendation of a friend who recently graduated from United’s Medical Assisting program. “It seemed like a fun school to go to. The staff seemed helpful,” Chelsea says. Pursuing medical assisting seemed like a logical step for Chelsea. “I’ve always wanted to be a nurse and thought medical assisting would be a good start.” (Many United students choose to pursue a Medical Assisting degree before moving into nursing because it helps prepare them for the fast-paced Practical Nursing program.) When asked what her favorite class has been so far, Chelsea said that the anatomy and physiology courses were her favorite because she loves learning about how the body works. Chelsea also said that, while she likes all her instructors, her favorite instructor is Medical Assisting Program Director, Kelli Workman. “I enjoy all the instructors, but Kelli Workman is my favorite because she explains things so that they are easy to understand, she doesn’t give up on us, and she will push you until you get it.” United Career Institute prides itself on the one-on-one attention our instructors give our students and the support we offer to help our students reach their educational and career goals.

Chelsea’s ideal job after graduation is in a pediatrician’s office. She wants to work with children because they touch her heart. Her five-year goal is to become a pediatric nurse. When asked If she would refer a friend to United she quickly responded, “yes, it is a fast-paced environment, but at the same time the ultimate learning goal is accomplished.”

How to Create SMART Career Goals

We all have goals that we want to accomplish in life and in our careers. Maybe you aren’t fulfilled in your current job and want a more rewarding career or maybe your goal is to be the first person in your family to graduate from a training program.

Regardless of what you want to achieve, setting SMART career goals can get you there! The most effective goals follow these five guidelines: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

Using these criteria to create your SMART career goals gives you a higher chance of success. How exactly do you create SMART career goals? Keep reading as we share with you exactly how!

Specific

First, SMART career goals must be specific, so that you know exactly what to do in order to reach them. Here is a great example of a specific goal: I want to graduate from a Medical Assisting program in Westmoreland County within 18 months in order to begin a more rewarding career. This is a specific goal because it answers the following questions:

Now that you have answered these questions and created a specific goal, you know exactly what to do to achieve the goal.

Measurable

Next, you need to make sure your SMART career goals are measurable. Creating measurable goals ensures that you can track the progress you make toward your goals. As you take steps to reach your goals, you will be able to tell if you’re on track to meet them or if there is something you need to change.

Separating your larger goal into smaller chunks is the best way to do this. With the goal of completing a medical assisting program to start a more rewarding career, you could create milestones along the way for each class that is part of the program. This way, you are one step closer to your goal for each class you complete.

Attainable

As you create your SMART career goals, it’s essential to create ones that are attainable, because it’s hard to stay motivated to work toward a goal that’s not actually achievable. An example of an unattainable goal would be going to Mars next month. While this sounds like a great goal, it’s not actually attainable, because the technology to go to Mars doesn’t yet exist. Setting super high goals can seem like a good idea, but it can actually be demotivating, because you know you can’t accomplish them anyway.

In our medical assisting goal example, some things you should consider to ensure the goal is attainable for you is if can you commit the time required for the program, do you have the support system needed, and do you have any prerequisites that are required.

Relevant

The next thing you must do is ensure your SMART career goals are relevant to you. Here are some questions you should ask about each specific goal: Is this something you really want to achieve? Do you care enough to put in the work? Does this goal align with your other goals? Does this goal fit into your long-term plans?

For example, our medical assisting goal is relevant because it will help reach your dream of starting a more rewarding career. By achieving this goal, you’re working toward a long-term goal of being in a career that brings you more meaning and fulfillment.

Timely

Last, you need to ensure that your SMART career goals are timely. Creating a timely goal means that it has a time frame that you will complete the goal within. If you create a goal with no deadline, there is no sense of urgency to work toward the goal.
