Externship Highlight -Transitions Healthcare

Transitions Healthcare

Externship Facility

United Career Institute prides itself on its many wonderful relationships with local healthcare employers. Our Practical Nursing, Medical Assisting, and Phlebotomy programs rely heavily on these relationships to fulfill the externship and clinical requirements. We love to see our students thrive in their field of study with the guidance of real medical professionals in the area. One of the businesses we work closely with is Transitions Healthcare in North Huntingdon, PA.

Transitions Healthcare has been established for over seven years, providing nursing and rehabilitation services such as in-home dialysis. They provide a site for our Practical Nursing students to complete their Nursing Fundamentals clinical rotation.

Student Experience

Transitions Healthcare supplies our students with hands-on experience and skills training in many things, including wound care, administering medication, care planning, completing rounds with a physician, and much more. Our students also get to see the importance of excellent patient care and establishing patient rapport in a real workplace setting.

While United Career Institute benefits significantly from the cooperation of Transitions Healthcare, Tina Yakich assures the benefits are mutual. Tina, an employee of Transitions, said they appreciate the “attention to patient care and new perspectives students bring.” She further explained, “it helps our organization care for our patients. We value their learning experience and their input.”

With an increasingly high demand for healthcare professionals, Tina expressed, “Our hope is to have these students as part of our Transitions Family after they graduate.” It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to establish relationships with potential employers before graduating.

Many of our students accept positions with employers where they completed externships or clinical rotations. The Transitions Family just gained three of our recent Licensed Practical Nursing graduates, and we hope to continue this positive, professional relationship.

Tina’s advice for students considering joining United Career Institute is to “keep your mind and heart open to any possibility. The first job chosen may not be your job for the rest of your life. The healthcare field is in dire need of eager, kind, and caring individuals. LPNs touch so many individuals’ lives that your ‘career’ should be making a difference in the lives you touch… start and end each day with making a difference. By entering United, you’re already starting that journey.”
